Grip size and cold hands
· Dennis Gray
Hands change with the seasons. In summer they swell a little and in winter they shrink inside a glove, which means a grip that felt perfect in July can feel loose by December.
We measure grips by hand length and finger length, not by guesswork. A quarter-inch change in size does more than most people expect. A grip that is too thin encourages a hook. One that is too thick can hold the face open.
When to regrip
Most golfers wait too long. If the tape is shiny, if you squeeze harder than you used to, or if you find yourself reaching for the rosin bag, it is time. A set takes us about forty minutes.
If you play year-round, ask for a slightly softer compound for winter. It costs the same and helps in the cold.
