The garage years
Harlan Gray was a toolmaker who played badly and wanted to know why. He took apart his own clubs, measured everything, and began fixing friends' sets on weekends. By 1989 the garage had a waiting list, which was the first sign that the hobby might become something else.
Washington Street
In 1994 he rented a small storefront near the Riverwalk. The first sign was hand lettered. The front room held a bench, a shelf of heads and a coffee pot. Customers sat on upturned crates until he found real stools.
The second generation
Walt came back from three seasons at a club in Wisconsin in 1998 and started doing the fittings. Dennis, who had worked in a machine shop, took the repair bench. The shop has changed locations within the block twice, but never left the block.
Now
We still keep the shop small and the appointments long. We buy components from a handful of suppliers and we test everything before we sell it. If a part does not hold up, it comes off the shelf.
